Eligibility Criteria:
- An international driving permit is available to Irish residents, who possess a current full Irish driving licence. European Union/European Economic Area citizens who are in possession of a full driving permit from a competent authority in their own country and who are resident in Ireland can also obtain an international driving permit in Ireland that is valid for use abroad.
IDP Accepted:
- Ireland recognizes physical IDPs, as long as they meet the requirements set by the country’s traffic regulations.
Application Process:
- You can download an application form for an international driving permit (pdf). A copy of the form is also available from AA Travel Services. You use the same form if you are renewing your permit.
- Your application must include the following:
- A copy of your current valid Irish driving licence (front and back)
- A passport-sized photograph signed on the back
- The fee of €15.00 (express service)
- A copy of a household bill dated in the last 3 months (If applying with a non-Irish driving licence)
Validity:
- An IDP obtained in Ireland is generally valid for one year from the date of issue. If needed, it can be renewed, but the validity cannot exceed the expiration date of the domestic driving licence.
Accepted Countries:
- Ireland is a party to international conventions, such as the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic. The IDP issued in Ireland complies with the standards set by these conventions.
Driving Licence Requirement:
- A driving licence issued by a member state of the EEA is recognised throughout the EEA. Otherwise, you must be able to present both your IDP and your local driver’s licence when you travel.
