Eligibility Criteria:
- Individuals who possess a Japanese Driver’s Licence and can provide proof of travel abroad
IDP Accepted:
- Japan recognizes physical IDPs, as long as they meet the requirements set by the country’s traffic regulations.
Application Process:
- The procedures for obtaining an International License are as follows:
- Place of Application: Chiba and Nagareyama Driver’s License Centers
- Fee: 2,350 yen
- Necessary Documents:
- Application Form
- Photo (4.5 cm x 3.5 cm portrait, full frontal view of the face without a head covering, taken against a plain background within the last six months)
- Japanese Driver’s License
- Proof of travel abroad, which can include:
- Passport or Receipt for the Passport
- Seaman’s Pass or Notice of Boarding
- Copy of Request for the Issue of the Official Passport
- Certificate of the Official Trip issued by a governmental agency – Certificate issued by a travel agency, etc.
- International driving permit obtained last time if not returned to the authorities.
Validity:
- An IDP obtained in Japan is generally valid for one year from the date of issue. If needed, it can be renewed, but the validity cannot exceed the expiration date of the domestic driving license.
Accepted Countries:
- Japan is a party to international conventions, such as the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic. The IDP issued in Japan complies with the standards set by these conventions.
Driving License Requirement:
- An IDP is not a driving licence in its own right. You must be able to present both your IDP and your local driver’s licence when you travel.
