Eligibility Criteria:
- You must be at least 18 years old and should hold a valid Malaysian driving license.
IDP Accepted:
- Malaysia recognizes physical IDPs, as long as they meet the requirements set by the country’s traffic regulations.
Application Process:
- Prepare the necessary documents for your International Driving Permit (IDP) application, including your original MyKad, a valid Malaysian driving license with more than one year of validity, and one license-sized photograph with a white background. Next, visit the nearest Jabatan Penangkutan Jalan (JPJ) office or UTC, bringing all the required documents mentioned earlier. Submit these documents to the JPJ officer, who will process your application. Then, proceed to pay the application fee of MYR150 in cash to proceed with your application; please note that this payment is non-refundable. After completing these steps, wait for processing, which is usually quick, typically just a few minutes. Once you have submitted your application and fulfilled all necessary requirements, you can expect to receive your IDP promptly.
Validity:
- An IDP obtained in Malaysia is generally valid for one year from the date of issue. If needed, it can be renewed, but the validity cannot exceed the expiration date of the domestic driving licence.
Accepted Countries:
- Malaysia is a party to international conventions, such as the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic. The IDP issued in Malaysia complies with the standards set by these conventions.
Driving Licence Requirement:
- An IDP is not a driving licence in its own right. You must be able to present both your IDP and your local driver’s licence when you travel.
